Drone Cinematography

In 2013, I brought a GoPro with me when I met up with my dad at a helicopter show (my dad is an inventor who created a helicopter ground handling device). My dad became somewhat obsessed with my GoPro and next thing I know he got himself his own GoPro AND a DJI Phantom drone. The original Phantom was camera-less, but could hold a GoPro, so before long he and I were flying drones all over his land in Wisconsin, at Burning Man, and anywhere we thought we could capture some unique aerial footage. Drones were a game changer for video production and it was only natural that I started taking to them for my own production needs.

I got an inexpensive “practice drone” almost immediately, but I didn’t get a professional drone until 2017, and the first big project I used it on was filming my proposal to my girlfriend, Kate (she said, “Yes!” and is now my wife!). If you need a FAA registered and certified drone operator for real estate, weddings, sports, commercials, films, or practically any other imaginable use, I’m your guy! I also teach private drone lessons, so if you’ve got (or are getting) an expensive drone, let me help you use it properly and safely.

FAA Part 107 Certified

Some notes about drone work: As a FAA certified remote unmanned aircraft (sUAS) pilot, there is a slew of rules and regulations that must be followed when operating a drone, commercially or otherwise. For example, if I need to fly a drone in controlled airspace or over people, it will be necessary to get a waiver to operate. It’s possible it can take up to 90 days to get a waiver, if approval is even given. As a result, I recommend reaching out [so we can begin the planning stage] as soon as you can. Also, each project’s cost will vary depending on a number of different factors. When we discuss our collaboration, I will be sure to go over everything that is relevant to your proposed project, and we’ll hash out all the details so we’re all safe, legal, and prepared when the big day to fly comes!
